In our last article of this series, we are going to look at one of the most significant “I Am” statements in my opinion that Jesus ever stated. It comes in John 14 so let’s gain some background on this statement.
Jesus has just told his disciples that he is going to prepare a place for them and he is leaving them to go to the Father. He also tells them that he will come back and take them with him. He then tells them something that baffles them. He tells them they know the way to where he is going. They then tell Jesus that they don’t know where he is going and they don’t know the way. So then Jesus gives them his response.
John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
There are three components to this statement and it is almost as if this statement is a summary of all of the statements we have studied. He says that he is the way, which can be used in the statements of the Shepherd and Light. He says that he is the truth in which we follow because we know his voice as the sheep know their shepherd’s voice. He also says that he is the life, which is emphatically discussed with the resurrection statements and bread of life statements.
Jesus is all three of these things. He is the only way to the father. He is the way to eternal life and way to forgiveness. He is the truth in that every word he says is truth and he is full of it (John 1:14). He is also the life. Without his resurrection and triumph over death there would be no life for us. He is life and gives life and for that we are thankful.
This statement is like one big mega statement telling his disciples that he is the I AM such as God told Moses in Exodus 3. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can access the father, no one can gain eternal life except through Jesus. This is good news. This is the news we need to let everyone know about as we await his coming.
