I AM…The Resurrection

Jesus felt many of the same emotions we feel on a daily basis. One of those emotions is grief from the loss of a loved one. Jesus experiences this too as his friend Lazarus has died. Jesus goes to the place where he lay to go raise him from the dead. Martha comes to Jesus and only wished he had come sooner so he could have saved him. Jesus tells her that he will rise again. Martha’s response was basically an “I know”, statement as she was thinking at the resurrection he will live. Jesus’ response is where we get our next “I Am” statement.

John 11:25-26 says, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’”.

Jesus tells Martha that He is the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Jesus will live for eternity.. Even if they die in this life, they have life through Jesus for eternity. Since Jesus is life, he gives that life to those who believe in him. Jesus goes on to die on a cross for us, but he resurrects, proving that he holds the power of resurrection and of life. HIs further actions prove this statement.

Jesus goes on to prove this also by raising Lazarus from the dead. He was in the tomb for four days and when Jesus calls him out, Lazarus comes out still with the tomb clothes on. This proves that Jesus gives life and is the resurrection.

Since Jesus will never die, all those who believe in him will never die also, at least eternally. He gives life and is life. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, that same Spirit can live in us also. Romans 8:11 says, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” We can also have life through the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead because that same Spirit can live in us also. Thanks be to God that Jesus is life and the resurrection and we can have eternal life through Him.
