Top Ten: #6- God’s Existence

Do we need to prove that God exists?

This is a question that I have often wondered about and probably some of you have as well. We often find ourselves in debate or arguing with someone trying to prove the existence of God to them. But, the real question is why? Why do we need proof that God exists? Many people think that they need rock solid evidence to be convinced of or to prove God and his existence. Some of us (me included) cringe or maybe even get a little furious when someone mentions evolution or some other theory that says God didn’t create this world. Then, we feel the need to fight back with scientific, or even philosophical proof that they will believe, he exists and he did create this wonderful universe. But, we don’t need to prove anything and the scriptures tell us that.

There is a verse in fact that tells us that we don’t need to have proof that he does in fact exist. That verse, Hebrews 11:3. It says  “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” This verse says it perfectly: “BY FAITH”. As Christians everything we do is by faith. And it is by faith that we believe that God exists. We don’t have to prove scientifically, or philosophically that he exists. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says “For we live by faith, not by sight.” We must live by faith, and believe in something that is unseen and not live by something that is seen. Because, we can’t physically see God here on this earth. A lot of people feel the need to prove God even to themselves. Some people doubt that there is a God. Then, based on those doubts faith isn’t enough to satisfy their curiosity. They need “proof”, and that is when the devil takes root of us. When we are in doubt. James 1:6 says “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” When we doubt our faith is like a wave. It’s tossed and flipped there’s no firm foundation upon which the faith is built. But, scriptures tell us that we need to be strong; and firm in the faith. 1 Corinthians 16:13 says “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” So to wrap it all up, we don’t need to “prove” Gods existence to other people or ourselves. All we need is faith to know that he created this universe and that he dwells among us today.

Romans 1:20 also says “ For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” Meaning that, even though God can’t be seen by us, (John 1:18) we can still see his glorious power through the creation. And that should be enough “proof” to know that he does exist.
