“Where two or three are gathered… there I am among them.” — Matthew 18:20
Every time I hear someone quote this verse, they are referring to a time where more than one Christian is gathered. Whether it be a bible study, a meal, any get together at all people feel this verse applies to that situation. Because of how this verse is interpreted, they feel that no matter where Christians are gathered and no matter what they are doing, as long as they are gathered in the name of Jesus, Jesus’ direct presence is there with them in the gathering. Let’s first explore the context of this invaluable but misapplied verse.
There is a very specific situation Jesus teaches about right before this line is said. Jesus is wrapping up his teaching on dealing with sin between believers. Jesus explains an organized process to bring the believer in the wrong back to repentance and the process is strategic. First you go to that believer and speak with them, then you bring another witness along, then bring it before the entire fellowship for accountability. This process is meant to stir the believer to repentance but if they still refuse, disfellowship may occur.
Jesus then says that whatever two disciples agree upon and ask for, God will answer the request. Well in this context why are two disciples coming and meeting together? To stir one of them towards repentance and restoration of relationship. This verse has nothing to do with regular church meetings or events. This verse is about an intimate moment between two disciples where one of them who has sinned has been encouraged towards repentance. The agreement in the verse is the agreement to repent and restore and the request the disciples make is about forgiveness. Jesus is saying he will be with those who gather to help one another along in his name, call out wrongdoing, and restore. Jesus is there with those gatherings though they are often private or anxious meetings, he will be right there in the midst of them, offering comfort and love.
