Hebrews 1 presents one of the most breathtaking Christological passages in all of Holy Scripture. The author opens by framing the Son in seven magnificent descriptions: He is the heir of all things, the agent through whom the universe was made, the radiance of God’s glory, the exact representation of His being, the one sustaining all things by His word, the one who provided purification for sin, and the exalted King who sat down at the right hand of God. Ultimately, all of this demonstrates that Jesus is superior to angels in both His being and His name (v. 4).
The Heir of All Things
God appointed Jesus as the ultimate heir. In Scripture, the themes of heirship, inheritance, and the firstborn converge. This narrative begins in Genesis 3:15 with the promise of the “seed.” Later, Abraham was promised the land of Canaan as an inheritance. In ancient Near Eastern culture, the firstborn had a legal right to a “double portion” of the inheritance—encompassing property, land, and belongings. As Israel’s story unfolded, a deeper truth emerged: God Himself became the ultimate inheritance of Israel, and the elect became His inheritance (Jer 10:16; Deut 32:9). Because Jesus is God’s unique Son, He is the rightful heir of all creation. Through the power of the cross, believers are adopted and become co-heirs with Him, receiving the Kingdom of God as our inheritance.
The Creator of the Worlds
God made the worlds through the Son. The original text uses terms reflecting ages (G165), periods of time, and the physical cosmos—showing that Jesus spans time and space. God crafted the world through Him (John 1:3), and as Paul echoes, all things were created both by Him and for Him (Col 1:16).
The Radiance of Glory and Exact Representation
Jesus is the visible manifestation of God’s glory. His “radiance” speaks to divine light and brilliance, recalling God’s glory filling the tabernacle in Exodus 40:34. As John 1:14 notes, in Jesus, “we beheld His glory.” Furthermore, He is the “exact representation”—a Greek term rooted in coin stamping, where an exact image is impressed into metal. Jesus is the literal embodiment of God in character and nature; His identity is fully God. Together, these two descriptions reveal that Jesus shines forth as God’s glory and is God in human form.
The Sustainer of Creation
Jesus is continually sustaining everything by the power of His word. Connecting back to John 1, Jesus not only created the cosmos, but He actively sustains it. Paul reinforces this in Colossians 1:16–17, noting that in Him, all things “hold together”—literally sticking together. Jesus is not an absent landlord; He is the very power by which reality continues to exist every moment.
Purification for Sin and Exaltation at the Right Hand
In the Old Testament sacrificial system, animal sacrifices addressed impurities over lengths of time through repeated rituals. In contrast, Jesus shed His own blood, offering a definitive, one-time sacrifice that truly purifies from sin. Having finished this work, He took His place at the right hand of God—a position drawing on Daniel 7 imagery that signifies His ascension and active, ongoing rule over creation.
Living in Light of the Exalted Son
Understanding Hebrews 1 moves us beyond mere head knowledge; it transforms how we live. If Jesus is actively holding the cosmos together, we can surrender our anxiety and trust His sovereign care over our daily lives. Because He offers a complete, one-time purification, we no longer walk in shame or strive for God’s favor through legalistic efforts. And as co-heirs who share in His Kingdom, we are called to embody His active rule today—living out the compassionate, self-giving way of Jesus in a world desperately needing His light.
