“I can do all things through Christ…” — Philippians 4:13
If there is a verse that is made into wallpapers for devices and refrigerator magnets, this is the one. Quoted everywhere this verse is taken as one of the most encouraging verses used. Most apply this verse when there is a challenge they are trying to accomplish and this verse reminds them that with Jesus on their side, they can accomplish anything. But is that really what this verse is saying? Let’s dive into the context of this verse to find out.
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Now that we have the verse in its full context, we can begin to interpret it. Paul is showing appreciation for their renewed concern for him and this is because they were not able to see him to help him in any way. Paul clarifies his intent. He is not saying this so that he can receive things from them. He is not in need of anything but rather is content with what he has and where he is. For clarification, he is in prison at this time, most likely under house arrest (1:13). Nonetheless, he is not a free man and cannot do as he pleases. He has to rely on folks to bring him food and supplies since he cannot leave and is under guard and locked in chains. This adds a layer to what he says about not needing anything. He may be taken care of for the moment, but he trusts in God that his basic needs will be met.
Paul is content in his situation. How can he be content in a situation such as his? He tells us the secret. He knows what it’s like to have plenty and what it’s like to have nothing at all. The secret he says is our famous verse, he can do all things through Christ who gives him the strength. Our famous verse is not about having the strength to accomplish our own goals but to have the strength to persevere through the hard times and be content with our situation. Too many times we focus on wanting God’s strength to do something like break a sports record or something trivial. This verse is about believers being able to withstand trials in life and holding on to the faith through the power of Christ and being content with that situation. God gives us strength to persevere, to be content, and to not desire other circumstances but to rejoice in where we are.
