In 2 Peter 1, Peter wants his readers to know they have everything they need to live a godly life (v.3). God has given all believers promises, promises of salvation, promises of His Spirit in us, promises of a risen Savior. Since we have received these promises, we should live in such a way that reflects our gratitude and belief. There are certain qualities we should be showing and working on to grow. Peter discusses these in 2 Peter 1:5-7:

  • Goodness
  • Knowledge
  • Self-Control
  • Perseverance
  • Godliness
  • Affection
  • Love

These 7 attributes have a purpose. If we grow in these ways, Peter says in verse 8 that they will “keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of Christ Jesus”. Ineffective and unproductive Christians are what we want to avoid. These types of Christians can have weak faith and are at risk of falling away. In verse 9, Peter explains that those who do not possess these qualities forget God and what He has done. These things lead to life and keep us focused on his promises.

In this series, we are going to look at each of these words to determine a better understanding of what they are, how Scripture uses them, and how we can add them to our faith.
