Proverbs 22:8–9 / 2 Corinthians 9:6–7

Old Testament

  • The wisdom from these texts is that the wicked and rich will be repaid for the oppression of the poor and righteous. Generosity will lead to further blessing when shared with those in need.
  • “Rod of fury” — the anger and oppression the wicked cause will cease.

Textual

  • “Bountifully” — with blessings.
  • LXX addition to Proverbs 22:8 — God blesses a cheerful man and a giver; Paul writes, “It is the cheerful giver whom God loves.”

Jewish Use

  • Leviticus Rabbah 34:8 — when a man gives alms, let him do so with a joyful heart.
  • Willing and joyful giving is a common idea.

New Testament Use

  • Just as God expected Israel to be givers, so also Christian believers should be generous givers.
  • God provides abundance that it may be shared, not hoarded.
  • The specific context is giving for saints in Jerusalem, but the principle applies to all circumstances that provide opportunity for generosity.
