Psalm 19

Psalm 19 is split into two main sections. 

 v.1-6 Evidence of God

 v.7-11 Law of God

It may seem that the evidence seen in creation and a section regarding the law of God do not mix as one psalm. However, after closer examination and meditation we will discover that they are in fact correlating topics. 

Paul opens up Romans by discussing how the evidence of the existence of God is clearly seen in nature and creation all around us. David, here in Psalm 19, talks about how the heavens in the skies are witnesses and declare through their own glory how great and wonderful God is. They reflect the glory of their creator. David describes the heavens as speaking, however, this is just a metaphor as they speak when people look at them and marvel. 

The rest of the psalm focuses on the law of God. God‘s law is called the Torah here and this is because it is God‘s instructions.

v.7-11 “law” Torah – Instruction 

Result: brings life

“testimony” – bear witness 

Result: We can trust God for who He is

“statutes” Direction – to inspect 

Result: Joy in knowing we are doing right

“commands” Charge, Command 

Result: gives clarity on ethical choices

“fear of the Lord” Revere, awe 

Result: our response keeps us on the right path

“ordinances” Judgments – govern, set right 

Result: Give us warning

Exposes our pride and redirects our bad desires
