Proverbs 25:21–22 / Romans 12:20
Old Testament Context
- Verse 21 is about showing kindness to enemies.
- Verse 22 is the result of showing kindness.
- “Heap burning coals” — a punishment for evil (Egyptian imagery).
- Most likely in context, it means that our kindness causes repentance and we receive reward from God. The other meaning is that by doing good, we further their condemnation.
- By showing kindness, we can turn evil responses into loving responses.
New Testament Context
- Paul encourages Roman Christians to:
- Live at peace.
- Not take revenge.
- Trust that God will vindicate.
- What should we do instead of taking revenge?
- Show kindness to enemies.
- This will transform the person because we are overcoming evil instead of being overtaken.
