Proverbs 25:21–22 / Romans 12:20

Old Testament Context

  • Verse 21 is about showing kindness to enemies.
  • Verse 22 is the result of showing kindness.
    • “Heap burning coals” — a punishment for evil (Egyptian imagery).
    • Most likely in context, it means that our kindness causes repentance and we receive reward from God. The other meaning is that by doing good, we further their condemnation.
    • By showing kindness, we can turn evil responses into loving responses.

New Testament Context

  • Paul encourages Roman Christians to:
    • Live at peace.
    • Not take revenge.
      • Trust that God will vindicate.
  • What should we do instead of taking revenge?
    • Show kindness to enemies.
    • This will transform the person because we are overcoming evil instead of being overtaken.
