Are there other gods?

Are there other “gods”? This is a question that many try to avoid because it may seem uncomfortable or confusing. Did the Greek and Roman gods really exist? Are the Egyptian gods real? While the Bible does not come out and explicitly say that Zeus and Osiris are real beings, it is clear about the existence of other spiritual beings. The Bible does teach that there are other spiritual beings in the spiritual realm who have power. This article is going to be about spiritual beings and what the Bible has to say about them. Let’s dig in.

First, we must uncover that the Bible speaks of other spiritual beings and a word that we will use quite often is the word “elohim” in Hebrew. Without getting too nerdy or technical, this word means “deity” or “spiritual being”. Although there are many forms of this word, they all come back to the root meaning, a spiritual being. This word is not a word used to describe a being that doesn’t exist. In fact, it is used when referencing Yahweh God as well (Deuteronomy 10:17). There are several examples in Scripture where this word “elohim” is used to reference another spiritual being besides God (Exodus 12:12, 2 Chronicles 33:15, 1 Kings 11:33). These beings are mentioned because they exist, not because some man made them up in their mind. We must acknowledge and be aware of the fact that there other spiritual beings in the spiritual realm.

However, with this knowledge of the existence of other spiritual beings, we must be careful not to forget an important truth. Our God is the God above all others. Deuteronomy 10:17 makes this clear, “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,”. In Hebrew it literally says that God “is the elohim of elohim”. He is the chief elohim and chief God. There is no deity above Yahweh.

This does not mean, however, that these other spiritual beings are not without power. They very much have power to influence us and pull us away from our relationship with God. This is why Paul tells us to put on the armor of God to defend against the dark and evil powers that want to influence us (Ephesians 6:10-17). Satan and his rebels are trying to attack us in every way possible to get us off the right track. What better way to do it, than to make us think they don’t even exist!

The answer to the question of “Are there other gods?” can be stated as there are other spiritual beings but Yahweh is the chief elohim. The word “elohim” can be used to refer to any deity but God is the One above them all.
