Obedience is an element of faith we must have. We must be obedient to God as a Christian and we must follow the way of Jesus. We are told in Scripture to obey God, but why? Why is it so important to obey God? In this study, we are going to answer that question in a way you may never have thought about it. SO let’s begin this study on obedience.
Obeying God is something that is given in Scripture. We can also think of obedience as following the way of the Lord. many verses tell us to obey like John 14:15, ““If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” And Acts 5:29, “But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” Keeping God’s command and doing what he wants us to do is a common theme in Scripture. It is a must, when we are Christians. We cannot be faithful servants of Jesus Christ without obedience.
Obedience is a lot harder than it sounds, however. Sin is in the world, and with it comes temptations to not obey God. Society also tells us to be independent. Society tells us it’s ok to do what we want and live how we want because it’s our life. This is a stark contrast to Scripture which tells us to obey God and follow Jesus. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:23 that, “”Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.” Paul is quoting what a lot of people think and say even in today’s world. Paul is saying that yes, we can do anything, but that does not mean it is right. It does not mean we should do something, even though we can. The mindset of those who think that they can do anything even if it is wrong is very clear. Those who think this way have the mindset that this life is it. We have one life and we might as well do what we want. The truth is, they’re wrong. There are two lives we can live, an earthly life and an eternal life.
We all receive the earthly life but the eternal one is not a guarantee. John 8:51 tells us, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” Jesus spells it out for us right here. If we can obey God, we will never see spiritual death, we will have eternal life. Without obedience, there is no way to get to heaven.
Many people see obedience as being a “slave” to God. They see it as no freedom, no independence, and we can only do what God says and they want no part of it. Once again, those who have this mindset forget there is life after death. If we compare the time on this earth to eternity on a timeline, we couldn’t even see the time we spend on this earth. We cannot even imagine eternity because our physical minds can’t comprehend something that lasts forever. We must realize that the chain is sin, and Christ is the freedom.
In conclusion, obedience is key to eternal life. We must realize that the time is so short here on earth so we must live it for God to receive the reward of eternal life. As Jeremiah 7:23 says, “But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’”
In the statement “Obeying God is something that is almost given in Scripture” I was curious what the ‘almost’ means . I completely agree obedience is necessary and part of our faith. Great article.
