Proverbs 3:34

OT Context

  • V.25–35 focus on treatment of others.
  • V.32–35 – fates of the righteous and wicked
  • Those who scorn receive the scorn they give out, because they are proud. Those who are humble receive grace and favor.
  • The mocking that God does is the favor and exaltation shown to the poor and humble.

Textual

  • LXX: God opposes the proud
  • Hebrews: he mocks the mockers
  • “mockers” – those who are pridefully arrogant
  • “humble” – Kethib – afflicted
  • LXX – meek or humble

Jewish Use

  • Stresses dependence on God for life-giving wisdom
  • 3 aphorisms:
    • blessed home of righteous
    • grace to the lowly
    • honor to the wise

New Testament

  • James 4:6, 1 Pet 5:5

James 4:6

  • James 4:1–6 analyzes wisdom that does not make peace.
  • 4:6 is an encouragement – grace shown to us needs the appropriate response and attitude – humility.
  • Quotes Proverbs 3:34 to prove humility is needed

1 Peter 5:5

  • Addressing young men to be submissive to elders.
  • Everyone should be humble and so God’s grace is shown.
  • Humility will lead to exaltation (v. 6)
