Proverbs 3:11-12

OT Context 

  • Do not reject discipline because discipline is meant to instruct and mature us and it comes out of love for us from God. 
  • Do not oath rebuke because rebuke is meant to correct us and we should be open to it. 
  • Discipline that comes from God has a purpose of positively guiding us to a better life. This is done out of God’s love for his humans. The father’s delight in a son is reflected in God’s love for us. 

Text

  • Discipline- musar=instruction 
  • Rebuke- you=correction
    • We should not reject or resent these two words or learning and growth will not happen. 
  • Proverbs 3:1-2 as a whole is about how wisdom should be lived out
    • The son is to obey the father
    • Trust. Fear, honor Yahweh
      • We do this by accept God’s discipline

Jewish Use

  • Philo says difficulties in life may be a blessing. God’s discipline brings us closer to him
  • Berakot- attributed discipline, if not for sin or neglect of reading the Torah it came from God’s love. 

NT Context

  • Hebrews 12:3-17
    • The proverb is quoted here to say that the challenges Christians face are meant to build them up and it comes from God’s love. Discipline validates, turns us, and leads us to holiness.
