What Is Discipleship?
What is the definition of a disciple?
The word disciple is the Greek word mathetes which comes from another word meaning to learn. This word indicates that there was thought accompanied by endeavor (Vines Dictionary). Disciples had teachers they were under and listened to. Based on the Greek word, a disciple was someone who just didn’t listen to their teacher, they followed that learning up with actions. They watched their teacher act from their teachings and the disciples did the same. Real learning happens when actions are affected by knowledge. Thus, being a disciple of Jesus means that we learn the teachings of Jesus and live by them but it also includes a little more than most other disciples. Jesus called for his disciples not just to follow his example but to be transformed by His Spirit. In this series, we are going to examine how Jesus taught about discipleship and what it truly means to be a follower of Jesus.
