Isaiah 66
The main themes for this chapter are weaved through the Old Testament and find fulfillment in the New Testament and will continue to find fulfillment until the end. This is because the theme of the last chapter of Isaiah is about the renewal of creation, something Scripture has been pointing to since the beginning. It is about judgment for the rebellious and hope for life for the righteous. God describes how the wicked will perish in the end but something strange (not very strange if we know God’s promises) the Gentiles from all different nations will be gathered together to become part of God’s people. This is what Christ and the church is all about. God’s people are not just made up of ethnic Jews but all peoples from all nations. They will all serve God in the end because they were not rebellious. Those who do not know God will face judgment but those who delight in Him will see everlasting life in the new heavens and new earth.
Application
We need to always live like this could be our last. Not in the sense the world does by acting crazy and doing nonsensical things but by living for God as if it’s our last. Those of us who know God are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth that bring forth the new creation. We know God is Sovereign which also means he is in control of judgment. Those who do not fear God and are rebellious will receive the judgment and die for good, they will not receive eternal life. We need to make sure we are staying humble and listening to God’s word as v.2 says. We do not need to be caught up in the world’s ways and follow their path to destruction, we need to stay on the path of life.
