Song of Solomon 7

This chapter of the best song of Solomon is one of the most clear in reversals of curses from the fall. One of the big curses for the woman was that the woman would desire her husband but she would rule over him. This is in the sense that the woman would be desiring power over the man and the constant tension between control over one another would take place. In this chapter though, we see clearly what was meant to be in the garden. The lover (man) in this chapter longs for the beauty and body of his wife. He describes her body and relishes in the thought of her embrace. Likewise, the woman says in verse 10, “I belong to my lover, and his desire is for me”. Here the woman knows who she belongs to, not in the sense of a slave but in the sense of two lovers who want only each other. She knows that her husband’s desire is for her and she is not trying to grasp at control of him. The theme of this whole chapter is love and devotion, something key to every marriage.

Application

We cannot help but apply this to marriages and see why marriages fail many times. The woman is satisfied with her husband and knows that her husband desires her. When we stray our eyes and our thoughts away from our spouse, those thoughts creep in and cause detrimental damage to the covenant of marriage. This couple desires no one else but each other and that desire, the healthy desire and devotion needs to be there for a healthy marriage. Not a desire of constant want and work from the spouse but the desire of their spouse’s love. This will continue the covenant made between one another and not let the curses seek in.
