Deuteronomy 32

Main Idea/Themes

Most of Deuteronomy 32 is made up of a song that declares Israel’s covenant, their future rebellions, and the ultimate judgment and vindication to come. The poem recounts Israel’s story and provides a realistic picture of their future state, one that is filled with God’s wrath and judgment. The poem is designed to create a sense of hope towards the end, as the faithful look to God for vindication and righteousness. Towards the end of the chapter, Moses urges the people to keep these words on their minds and hearts because they will give them wisdom that leads to life. The end of the chapter concludes bleakly, with the declaration that Moses and Aaron will die on the mountain and will not cross over into the promised land because of their rebellion.

Themes of apostasy, testing, and judgment permeate the words of this chapter. They are meant for us to reflect on them in our own life and see our own sin and rebellion and to remember to always look to God for wisdom and instruction.

Application

With Moses singing this song about Israel, it seems much cannot be applied in our modern western culture. There are, however, many scenarios we find ourselves in through the society we live in that makes this song true for any nation and people. We have all been called by God now in the new covenant to be faithful followers of Jesus, just as Israel was called to be followers of the covenant. We have all fallen away to different idols and have served other “gods” in our life before coming to Jesus. Those who are not faithful will receive God’s wrath and judgment, but those who are righteous will be vindicated, offering hope in the midst of trial and suffering. There is something here for everyone no matter where they are on the journey of life.
