In Galatians 5:13 we are called to “serve one another humbly in love”. It is only through love that we are able to serve one another and we must also not do it grudgingly but willingly and with an attitude of gratefulness and sincerity. When we do an act of service for someone we are showing Christ’s love to them. When we serve others, it is really Jesus we are serving (Colossians 3:24). Along with serving one another, I have included submitting to one another. This word means “subject to” or to “obey”. This is not to mean that we are to boss each other around. In context, Paul uses this command for husbands and wives because their relationship with one another reflects the church’s relationship with Christ. We submit to one another out of fear of Christ or because we obey Jesus, we should respect each other. We are not to talk back or cause divisions among one another but always seek peace and unity. When we are humble with one another, we are able to heed advice and encouragement from one another. By being humble and serving one another, we become a community of followers that show love for God by loving one another.
