In John 13:34, Jesus gave his disciples a command to love one another. This command also flows down to us as believers today. This command wasn’t new in the sense that they had never heard such a thing. It was new in the sense that it had fresh meaning with the background and significance Jesus was giving it. This was so important to Jesus that he marked loving each other as the indication of his disciples. In a world of hate and greed, love stands out, and Jesus knew that. We are to love each other with the kind of love that Jesus showed and as he says in John 15:13, the greatest act of love is sacrifice. We sacrifice our time our resources for the benefit of others. 1 John 4:11 also highlights the fact that God loved us first. When we were lost, God chose to love us first. Therefore, we should love one another because by doing so we are reciprocating God’s love to others. If we love one another, we have God’s Spirit within us and that means we are truly sharing Christ’s love to those we show love to.
