In Luke’s gospel account, he states the reason for his writing. I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:3-4). Luke has done the work of a historian. He has taken accounts that have evidence by eyewitness or written and have ordered them. Luke knows the things Jesus did were fulfilling prophecies but he makes no mention of them in his account. This a precise narrative account of the birth of Jesus and his reason is simple, so Theophilus can be sure that what he has heard about Jesus is true and accurate.

Luke may not reference any old testament prophecies in his narrative but he is certainly aware of who Jesus is. Luke 1:35, “So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God”. Luke 2:11, Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah. Luke knows that Jesus is the one Israel longs for and he knows what Jesus came to do.
