All sins are equal to God in that they all separate us from God and we are in need of rescue (Romans 3:23). We are all separated from God because of sin and no matter the sin. In this case, yes all sins are equal. However, the Bible does make a distinction between the consequences and outcomes of some sin over others.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus uses adultery, murder to make us realize that underneath those sins are bigger problems like anger and lust. Jesus says these two what we would consider “smaller” sins of anger and lust have a greater consequence. Now, in these cases, Jesus was using more intense language to get his point across that anger and lust are just as important to deal with as murder and adultery. The point remains the same, there might be conditions of sin we have to deal with.

In 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul talks about how sexual immorality is of a different category of sin because it is committed outside the body. This is to be compared with other sins such as lying or coveting that happen in our hearts first but the act of sexual immorality we have to make our bodies do and it affects the people around us.

So sin does separate us and in that aspect, they are equal in God’s eyes. But there are some sins that have different consequences in life but the eternal consequences, unless we are in Christ, are the same.
