How can we recognize the voice of God?

How can I know God’s will?

I am combining these two questions as they pertain to the same general concept. The concept of knowing what God wants and what he wants from us. As for the first question, some people do hear an audible voice from God and they know it when they hear it. Others simply do not hear a voice but it does not mean God does not speak to us. God speaks through many different avenues, through prayer, Scripture, and even other people. If something we are hearing aligns with Scripture and we remain prayerful about the situation, it is probably God speaking to you.

The second question of knowing God’s will has a lot of the same answers and we’ll look at some Scriptures that talk about knowing God’s will. The first one is Romans 12:2, “be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” We need to be transformed, our minds need to be changed in such a way that only the Spirit can do for us. When we live by the Spirit we start to desire spiritual things and thus our minds can be renewed because it is no longer focused on material things. Then we can start to test certain things or situations in our lives. Does it align with Scripture? Do I feel it is wrong? Then we start to discern what God’s will is because as paul describes God’s will it is good, acceptable, and perfect. If what we are discerning is not those things it is probably not God’s will. Likewise Matthew 6:33 says, “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”. If we are seeking the kingdom first and have a kingdom-first mindset then we will gain the things we need so as not to worry about what we need.

It might be hard to discern in certain situations what God’s will in your life might be. It might be a decision you have to make or an answer you have to give. Whatever the case may be we know that God desires all to be saved and that he wants all humanity to come to Him. Through prayer, Scripture, and the holy Spirit, one is able to discern the will of God in any situation. Jesus tells us that if we ask, we shall receive, and if we seek, we will find.
