Last time we talked about God being the chief spiritual being in the spiritual realm. His authority rules over all and is the judge of all. This time, we will talk about the next level of spiritual beings, God’s divine council.

The first question we should probably begin with is ‘What is the divine council?’. In Psalm 82 we are introduced to this idea of a courtroom type setting where spiritual beings reside, “God presides over heaven’s court; he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings”. They can also be called “sons of God” as in Job 1, “One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord”.  They are called by different names throughout Scripture but their entity remains the same, they are angelic like beings who surround the throne of God.

So what do these beings do? Well, according to the Scriptures, their main job is to praise and serve Yahweh. Psalm 29:1, Job 38:7 reference these beings honoring God and shouting for joy. In 1 Kings 22, a prophet gives us a glimpse into the throne room of God. 1 Kings 22:19 says,I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the armies of heaven around him”. We might also know these beings as the ‘hosts of heaven’. The story continues with a spirit suggesting actions to take against Ahab and carrying them out. This is a bizarre yet intriguing story into how Yahweh works with these spiritual beings that surround his throne.
