When it comes to spiritual beings and the spiritual realm, there seems to be much confusion on whether or not spiritual beings exist, and whether God is the only “god”. We are going to start this series talking about the God of the Bible as the ultimate spiritual being in power.

In Hebrew, we must start with the word most commonly used for “God” and that is the word “elohim”. Elohim can mean a god or deity, or any spiritual being in the spiritual realm. In the Bible, it mostly refers to Yahweh God that we are most familiar with. But this is not always the case. In Exodus 12:12, Yahweh says that he is executing judgment against all the “gods of Egypt” and the word used for gods is elohim. God also says not to have other “elohim” before him in Exodus 20:3. If there are no other gods in the spiritual realm to follow, why give this command? Because as Deuteronomy 10:17 proclaims, “For the Lord your God is the God of gods”. He is the supreme mighty being above all the others.

Now some might point to passages such as Deuteronomy 4:39 where Moses reminds them, “The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other.” Doesn’t that contradict what was said 6 chapters later? Not exactly. In Hebrew, there is the article “the” in front of “elohim” so that the reader knows Yahweh is THE God and there is no other supreme being. The God they worship is the only true king of the universe, not that he is the only spiritual being in the spiritual realm.
