What are miracles? Can they be done only by Almighty God? Do they still happen today? These questions are vital in understanding who God is, and comprehending how much power he has. We know that everything is possible with God,

Matthew 19:26 states, “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”” So nothing is to hard for God to accomplish (Jeremiah 32:27). But exactly what are miracles, and can anyone else perform them? We will answer these questions as we progress through this wonderful topic of miracles.  
Let’s start by getting a good idea of what miracles are. A miracle, in my opinion, is “an event that cannot be done by humans or natural laws, and is attributed to a supernatural power.” So basically it’s something that is unusual, something that shouldn’t happen by human power alone. A supernatural power has to act to be able to do such an action. Lets look at a few biblical examples to get a better idea of what they are exactly.

The first one we’re going to look at is in Exodus 3, the burning bush. Here God speaks to Moses through a burning bush, but the bush never burns. It stayed exactly the same way it was before the fire came upon it. This is not natural, if you were to light a bush on fire right now, it would burn to the ground and become a pile of ashes. We cannot make a bush burn and have it keep it’s form. The only way this can happen is by the power of God, just as it was when Moses saw this incredible event.

Another one would be in Genesis 11, when the languages at Babel were confused. There were people speaking many languages, that had not been taught to them. They just instantly knew how to speak a foreign language, and confusion took over. This is impossible for any human, within humanity power, to do. We must be taught things over a period of time to learn. This event again shows how much power God has. Even the events of the creation of the universe, are purely miracles. Anything nor anyone but God, can create such a universe as this one in six days out of nothing. Life itself is a miracle, just as one man once said, “Miracles, in the sense of phenomena we cannot explain, surround us on every hand: life itself is the miracle of miracles.” – George Bernard Shaw. So we know now that God does miracles, and there are many more than what was just mentioned above, but is He the only one who can? Is there another supernatural power than can do such acts? Well in fact, there is, and his name is Satan.

If Satan can perform miracles, does he have just as much power as God? Let’s look at a perfect example in the bible that will help answer this question. Exodus 7:8-13 says, “ The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.” So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.“ In this account, we have Aaron throwing down his staff and with God’s power it becomes a snake. We can therefore justify that what just happened was a miracle. But notice what happens next. Pharaoh’s sorcerers and magicians also did the same thing, their staffs became a snake too. But it wasn’t God who did it, so who did? If miracles cannot be done by human power, whose power was it that turned their staffs into snakes? It was Satan and his demonic power that did. But the important thing to notice in this account is what happens at the end, Aaron’s staff swallowed the Egyptian’s staff. What this symbolized is that God’s power always overrules Satan’s, and God has unlimited power, but Satan’s power is limited.   

Jesus warns us, of such Satanic power and tells us to not be deceived by the things that will be done. “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time.”- (Matthew 24:24-25). Satan uses whatever power he has to try and deceive us, to try and get us to rebel against God. His best weapon is deceit. Satan uses people many times, to deceive other people. John warns us of this in 1 John 4:3 which says, “but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.” Who is already in the world? The antichrists, or unbelievers. Some may not be out to deceive others like Satan is, some may purely just not believe. But there may be some that are out to deceive us and that is who we are to watch out for.

The answer to the last question, “Do miracles still happen today?”, is yes. Yes they do still happen today. People still go through or have things happen to them that would be considered a miracle. Some might consider these people crazy and out of their minds, but there is no reason to. Miracles are part of reality. There is no reason why God or Satan had to stop performing miracles after Revelation was written. God did miracles in the bible so that people who did not witness these events could believe in Him. He wanted to show us, just a glimmer, of how much power he has and he did show us, through miracles. He wants us to have faith in Him, not just believe in him because he does miraculous things for us.

So we have defined what miracles are, analyzed miracles, discovered who has miraculous power, and have answered the question, “Do miracles happen today?”, with a yes. But we must watch out for those who are trying to deceive us. “He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.”- Luke 21:8.
