In light of the 150th article being posted on this website, I thought it would be appropriate to dive into a Psalm from God’s Word, specifically the 150th Psalm. Psalm 150 is a beautiful psalm about praising God what God has done for us. Let’s dive deeper into this psalm to understand the beauty and greatness of God.

Psalm 150 in its entirety says this, “Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” At first glance, the word “praise” occurs 13 times in 6 verses, indicating the importance of praising God. However, it is not so much the praising that we can dig into but the “why?”. Why we should praise God is described in these verses and that’s what we’ll look at today.

In verse 2 it says “Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.” This is the “why?” we praise God, for his acts of power and his surpassing greatness. As the Israelites were singing this psalm, they would remember what God had done for them. They would remember how God created the world, how he saved Noah and his family. They would remember how God saved Moses and their people from the Egyptians and how they trampled over their enemies thereafter. All of these things should have been going through their minds as they were reflecting over this psalm and we can do the same. Perhaps God has done something (or many things) in your life and you think about those things and praise God for them. Reflection is a huge part of praise and that’s what this psalm calls us to do.

The other phrase we see is God’s “surpassing greatness”. What could this mean? Well right after they thought about the actual events and things God did for them, they would think about God’s attributes. His love, mercy, and compassion would running through their minds as they should with us. We should praise God for His love, His blessings, His greatness that surpasses anything we could ever imagine. Psalm 136 repeats over and over, “His love endures forever”. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” God’s love, mercy, and grace are part of His surpassing greatness and we should praise Him for those things.

In conclusion, I hope you take Psalm 150 to heart and remember to praise God always. You do not have to be in a church building to praise God. You can do it anywhere. Remember to praise Him for all He has done for us and for His amazing love, mercy, and grace. Praise God.
